Betty did not start as “let’s launch a casino.”
It started with direct conversation with players to understand how people experienced existing products, what frustrated them, and what felt missing from the market.
Those early player interviews became the foundation for many of the ideas that still shape Betty today. You can read more in the Talking to customers story.
What quickly became clear from the interviews was that one of the largest audiences in online casino was also one of the most underserved. Real-money online casino (iCasino) products were not meeting modern consumer standards.
Slots generate the majority of casino revenue, yet most real-money gaming products were designed through a sports betting lens. Product priorities, promotions, onboarding flows, and brand positioning reflected that bias. The slot player was often treated as secondary.
Yet, the audience we cared about was not small. It was large and structurally overlooked. Hundreds of player interviews revealed consistent patterns. Women represented at least half of iCasino players. Most of the women interviewed played slots exclusively.
At the same time, consumer expectations for digital products were rising quickly. Across industries, users had become accustomed to personalization, simplicity, transparency, and high-quality UX. Online casino products, by contrast, had evolved slowly.
Most players were not asking for complexity. They were asking for stability, clarity, and respect for their time. Slots were entertainment. A break. A small escape. But the product experience lagged behind what users expect from modern digital platforms.
Another important insight came from outside traditional gambling. Social casino products had already demonstrated that metagame mechanics and LiveOps can drive enormous engagement, even when the currency has no real value.
These systems clearly worked. The question was why real-money casino had barely adopted them. Betty believed these learnings could be thoughtfully adapted to regulated real-money gaming.
Betty saw an opportunity to rethink the online casino from first principles. The company centered around several core ideas that still shape the business today:
This thesis formed the basis of Betty’s earliest strategy documents, including the December 2021 pre-seed investment memorandum used to raise the first $1.8M and the March 2022 white paper that helped define the company’s long-term direction.
